In Virginia, we have personal property taxes, and then a "county sticker" that must be displayed in the windshield that proves you've paid up. In my county that's $24 annually. The tax has been reduced in recent years (70% relief for the first $20K value), but it's still a bit harsh. I think for the 8 moths left in the year (I just got my car) I'll be ponying up about $1150 or so. While it's not fun to pay, the county I live in is very well run and fiscally sound, so at least I'm not dumping money into a pit.

Also, it helps that the tax is deductable.

Illinois, $78. Same price Ferrari or Kia...

...BTW, our roads are real crappy. California roads were like driving on a billiard table in comparison.

Under these tax laws, consider that the more expensive your car, the more of the road to you pay for. I would argue newer/more expensive cars "use less" of the road as they're less prone to oil spills and various pieces falling off - and yet it is the average POS driver that is paying next to nothing for this tax...

Now, if they would truly let me use more of the road (read: let me speed around unabashed) I'll shut my trap...

Here in AZ, I paid $850 for my year 2 renewal. Felt like a big discount over last year's $925. Great roads out here, but geez.

Seems like when I lived in Va Bch we called them city stickers. Norfolk, VA BCH, Suffolk, Chesapeake, all had their own stickers at one time. Just before I left VA Bch in late 2003 it seemed they were doing away with the stickers (not the tax). Ur right, the 70% relief was a big help against that annual personal property tax. Plus a state income tax and sales taxes on many items - whew! glad I got outta there before I got my 6er. Florida is about $50 give or take. I believe it is partly based on weight.
