I wrote a small Android app that notifies the car whenever a text message comes in. It basically lets you read your text messages in the "My Info" section of the Communication menu.
The only catch is that I can't make the My Info screen come up when a message comes in. I've just been leaving it on My Info so I can see the messages as they appear.

It's pretty rough right now, but it works. I'm just gauging interest to see if anyone else wants it. If so, I'll clean it up and put it on the Android Market.

Also, are there other things you would want to see from the phone in the My Info section? I can send pretty much whatever text I want to the car.

am I right in thinking that you are using the Google interface for this and hence your car will need to have BMW Assist and your phone will need to have 3g or something?

Yep - I'm using the google interface. You'll definitely need a data plan, as the notification to the car happens over the internet.
I'm not sure if you need BMW Assist - I don't know the details of which BMW features come with which plans. If you can send addresses to you car with Google Maps, the Android app will work.

I wrote something similar but on Windows mobile. What I did was when an SMS came in, I would make a 'known' contact call the phone so that the car's bluetooth would pick up the call and when I saw that contact on the idrive I could switch to the My info. By then I had not yet gotten my bluetooth to KCAN interface working otherwise I would have directly moved to the My Info page.

Cool - sounds like there is some buzz for this. I'll clean it up this week so it's distributable.
