I can't stomach the look of 17s so I roll on 123s in the winter. But I use a 45 series sidewall rather than the recommended 40 series with 18 iinch wheels. The extra sidewall height is for pothole protection and I have not had rubbing issues.

I have alternate wheels for winter.
Normally, I run with my stock setup; staggered Style 172M 245/35r19's in the summer-- like the setup you have--but as a Montrealer, I've grown accustomed to deep, treacherous winters. Contrary to popular belief, snow doesn't fill up potholes very well
When I purchased my 550, I was happy to hear that a friend of mine was getting rid of 4 Style 138's wrapped with Dunlop WinterSport M3 225/50r17's from his old 550 (yes, I know, it's bad enough I'm driving it in the winter.) In all, compromising looks for performance is really not an issue when the wind blows cold and the snow is piled high; and since most of the snow has cleared up.. I'm getting closer to riding proper, back on the 172's. Can't wait !!

Also, moving from 19" to 17" wheels, will there be problems with space to accommodate the brake disk/pads?

Looking further into this. I think Style 138s with Dunlop Winter Sport M3 or 3D (225/50/17) are the way to go. Only question is, will these fit as a straight swap to my existing staggered Style 172s? I'm concerned about the change in width and offset differences which may make the wheels stick out from the arch or sit deep within the arch.

The second one: No, if you have stock brakes.

Thanks for the response. I'm also looking at the Style 134s with Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3s. Does anyone know if these will fit on the 525d too. I have the standard brakes.

Thanks for the info again. Yes they are hideous but with tyres it will cost me half as much as the the 138s plus I have more side wall protection on the tyres. The term open cast mine comes to mind with some of the pot holes around where I live.
