Alternative wheels for winter

Had a right nightmare this winter. I really need to get a set or spare wheels with good winter/snow tyres on for future UK winters. I've currently got 19" 172's which are staggered. Can anyone recommend a robust alternative that will take tyres with the same rolling diameter? I don't mind having small wheels and chunky tyres as I'm happy to compromise looks for winter performance. I'm also hoping that they will really absorb some of the deep pot holes that would destroy my currently wheels.

I have alternate wheels for winter.
Normally, I run with my stock setup; staggered Style 172M 245/35r19's in the summer-- like the setup you have--but as a Montrealer, I've grown accustomed to deep, treacherous winters. Contrary to popular belief, snow doesn't fill up potholes very well
When I purchased my 550, I was happy to hear that a friend of mine was getting rid of 4 Style 138's wrapped with Dunlop WinterSport M3 225/50r17's from his old 550 (yes, I know, it's bad enough I'm driving it in the winter.) In all, compromising looks for performance is really not an issue when the wind blows cold and the snow is piled high; and since most of the snow has cleared up.. I'm getting closer to riding proper, back on the 172's.
Can't wait !!

My Ride: 2008 BMW 550i M Sport
I'd buy a set of 17's. The more sidewall and the thinner tire in winter the better. I recomend wintersports M3 or 3D. Those tirew won many comparison tests in Europe.

i kept my 172's on all winter, but i put some good tires on and so far i love them.. and n.y had a rough winter.. i have the new continental DWS's.. the traction was good and it got me through the snow and up my block which is on a hill.. i cant sacrifice looks, im sorry..lol..

How good are winter tyres on dry roads? I'm asking because UK winters can have quite big periods of cold dry weather as well as the usual snow/wet days. I'm hoping to only change the wheels twice a year (start and end of winter period).
