you might be holding the release button down a little too long, the trunk release button on the keyfob is also the panic button if you hold it down for more than a couple of seconds.
The Panic Button should be it's own button, like a Lexus.... or at worst, the Lock button, held down for 3 seconds.

funny story about that:
when the sales guy was explaining this feature to me when i bought my car, i had to do a double take.
"...so you're telling me that i hold it for a couple of seconds, the trunk opens... but hold it longer, the alarm comes on?"
we looked at each other, then burst out laughing. even he agreed it was idiotic.
and don't get me started on the portable flashlight. the emergency is over before you can even yank that thing out or put it back in!

Try it sometime -- press and hold the button until the panic alarm sounds -- the trunk will still be closed...

And we all know that a car alarm going off causes everyone to drop what they are doing, seek out the cause of the alarm, and then call 911...
NOT.
The panic feature on any vehicle is useless. At any given time here in California there are like 1000 car alarms going off.
Want a panic button? Borrow my glock

I agree that alarms go off often and noone gives a damn -- especially in more populated areas.
One thing I'll say is that the panic alarm is more likely to cause a would be attacker to flee than the normal alarm is likely to cause a thief to flee. Also, if there are bystanders nearby and an alarm goes off, the bystanders will usually at least look in the direction of the noise...
