Two of my friends have had their BMWs stolen from their driveways -a 2006 535 and a 2007 X5. In both cases no alarm was heard - family in the home. Is it possible to turn off the theft alarm? Do sophistocated thieves have some electronic way to first turn off the alarm then steal the car? Can anyone explain this?

Drill a hole in the quarter panel and through the casing of the battery...the battery drains. Alarm disabled.

Wow. No comment on this except to say an aftermarket alarm with voltage drop detection, remote paging alert, and battery backup might not be a bad thing to install. Bastards pull this shit, I get alerted, grab the glock, and my car stays put.

My '89 E30's anti-theft system had a battery backup that allowed it to go off even if the battery was dead. I'm not sure about the E60 -- does anyone know for sure?

I'm not even sure if the scenario I described will work on the e60 or if it has a battery backup like your E30. I recall 80's or maybe even 90's Corvettes being stolen using this method. My Father has had 84, 87, 93, 98, 01, 04, 06 Corvettes.
