Yes, the trunk release button is also the panic alarm button. Hold it too long while trying to open the trunk and you get the alarm.

Learned that the hard way myself the first few times unlocking my e60. It seems holding any of the buttons on the FOB down for 3 seconds will set off the panic. At least I think that's what I read in the manual. For sure the trunk button does it tho...

No panic feature in mine?tried very hard to set it off by holding the button for 3 to 10 secs, all it does is close/open all windows & doors (convenience access) or the trunk/boot swings open.....(but the lights do blink & alram does work - tested it by locking the door but left one of the window open & slightest movement triggered it).

It's an American thing.
BMW probably concluded that Americans panic easily and gave them a button that facilitates expressing that feeling.
