Hi,

I prefer the Auto setting on my AC but when I turn the temperature knob it doesn't really change the temp from cold to hot. I have set the automatic programme in iDrive to "Medium". Then I ran across this feature in iDrive which doesn't have any explanation in the manual (at least not an explanation that I understand).

I do realise that I can change the setting from 4-5 stripes red=hot to 4-5 stripes blue=cold. BUT how does that affect the temp. knob on the panel and the autoprogramme? Do I need to go into iDrive everytime I want to have a warmer temp.?

Please help.

HI i prefer also auto,

if you select the auto the set temp will be reached e.g. I learned from Iceman I have it nite-day at 22 celcius degree.

NO you do not need to go to Idrive AC menu, if you want to adjust it - or + ,just turn the knob on the AC like a jogdial to set the temp you prefer.

There are other settings that I tried to use, but see the manual, that one was only for stand heat ro vent, that we did not opted.

Hope that helps, but maybe some can better explain...

Hi Knubblo

I only have the standard climate on my E61 and it looks like yours is probably the advanced option. However, I do have a screen similar to that you include in iDrive. For the standard AC this affects only the temperature of the air coming from the vents on the dash and (as far as I'm aware) is independent of the set temperature for the interior of the car. This enables you to have cool air on your face while the rest of the car is warm - a nice feature to keep you alert when driving at night.

Give it a try - set a nice comfortable temperature for the car and the open the centre vent and adjust the conrol you show. It should adjust the temperature of the air coming from the vent.

AFAIK, the IDrive setting is to make fine adjustments in the vent temperature for the different section of the Driver or Front Passenger. The knobs in the Dashboard help you to adjust the overall temperature of the car. Use this to make subtle changes to the Driver or Passenger zone. I remember just using the setting once in the Idrive menu. It should be a one time adjustment.

I normally use the knob to adjust the temperature of the car.

I never like the auto setting in the climate control because I hate it when the fan is blowing too hard sometimes. I always have my temperature set at 22 and on a hot summer days (30 something) here in Hong Kong I set those strips to the coldest (4 blue strips) and on a cold day (7-8) I would set it to 1-2 strips and heat will come out. So I think those strips means the tendancy for heat and air con to come out. I use the third fan speed at most and I am happy with it.

One more thing I think this only work when you don't have auto mode on, if you have auto mode you should set those strips so it is white and let the computer decides what to do.

This option is really meant to control how you want to achieve your temp setting (set temp thru the dials in the dash).

I know, I know - confusing right??!!

Try this: Set the i-drive setting to blue (cold air) all four bars. Now even if you adjust the temp dial all the way up beyond 80, you will still not get hot air. The only way to get really hot air is to change the i-drive setting to red.

The opposite works the same way. If you set the i-drive for hot air (red), and lower your temp dial setting to 60, no cold air. You will probably get "room" temp air.

Hope this explains it. Took me a while to figure it out.

That blue bar red bar thing replaces the dial on the E39 if you have ever been in one you know what I mean.

This feature in the iDrive is for adjusting the temperature for the upper body area. The automatic program settings only adjust the intensity of the auto program.
