I did not see this option available on my 550, it was never mentioned, or did I find it in writing.

Ya that was what happend to me too!! I was never mentioned of it when I got my 545 and I didnt see it on the bmwusa site... and when i found out here it was already too late... Its ok I suppose... I dunno... would have been a tough choice... spend another $500 or not... but then its a safety feature! so i would have wanted it...

Belief in the UK is that rear air bags are fine with kids as long as they are securely strapped in and aren't leaning against or towards a door when the collision takes place.

I was never able to get a straight answer on the safety of rear side airbags with children.? I have three kids ages 9, 7 and 4, so I decided not to get them but wish I could have found a reliable answer to that question.? Anyone have any insights?

Check out NHTSA's website for information on Side Impact Airbags (SA:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/testing/ncap...s/SABFAQs.htm#8

Most people I have talked to (including dealers, knowledgable friends, etc) do not recommend the SAB. The rear curtains are just fine.

I personnaly did not get it since I have a 1 1/2 yr old (he's almost 2 now).
