I did not see this option available on my 550, it was never mentioned, or did I find it in writing.

[/quote]Hmm, you're right! It doesn't show up as an option for the 550i in the configurator, but does for the other models...then again, it does show up on the Options and Packages page:
Safety and security
Rear-seat side-impact airbags and automatic tensioners on rear outboard safety belts
And the official US pricelist does show it as a $385 (MSRP) option specifically for 550i (as well as all other models); it's option code 261.

I was never able to get a straight answer on the safety of rear side airbags with children. I have three kids ages 9, 7 and 4, so I decided not to get them but wish I could have found a reliable answer to that question. Anyone have any insights?

I was offered it on my 550i order (Nov delivery) by my dealer. It is option code #261 and has a suggested list of $385 USD. Because I will occasionally have small children in the back seat I was advised not to get it, so I didn't.
