I had my '04 545i airbag light come on and provide a warning on the iDrive screen. I took the car in to BMW and they reset the light, stating if it came on again an airbag sensor would need to be changed. Sure enough the light and warning came on again the next day.
I took the car in and they replaced the driver side pillar airbag sensor to the tune of $668. The part was $385. Unfortunately with 109K miles I took the hit. Last month it was the cooling fan ($1200), this month it's the sensor. I'm wondering how many of these little expensive items I will have until I decide it's time for something new?

With a first year production model and over 100K miles, you'd be surprised at the "little" things that you will need to repair. However, with proper maintanence your car should reach 200K miles with no problem.
In the future, at some point you should have a BMW dealer perform an overall inspection of your car. There are many recalls and computer updates that they will provide for free. For instance a dealer would have replaced your front seat air bag sensor for free as it was a national recall and there are at least 2 computer updates I am aware of for a 2004 model.

I've had this car since 06 and purchased it as a CPO. BMW has serviced the car during its entire life. I never saw a recall for the airbag sensor except as it related to the passenger seat pad. They replaced that two years ago. If the recall you speak of is different, please let me know. Thanks.
It states that "If the air bag warning lamp and the passenger air bag "on-off" lamp are illuminated, please have the vehicle checked and serviced without delay,..."
Maybe that helps...
