hello,
today we checked the oil and water and replaced the right rear light unit. we also looked for the air filter in our 525d. we thought that it has to be under one of the two big plastic covers near the windscreen washers. are we right?

regards,
sese

I'm not sure since we don't have any diesels in the US But I would follow that large tube on the left of that photo.

The advice to follow the large tube is good, as this is the air intake and leads to MAF and air filter.
Below pic is from a 320d but also works for 525d or 530d. Number 10 the cylindrical bit is your air filter.

You need to take of the engine cover(s) and you get there following the tubes.

^^^ Yes, and the covers near the windscreen are for the cabin air filter (microfilter)
