Air Conditioner and Engine HP
My last car shut off the A/C when you floored it. When it was really hot outside, you could notice the air out of the vents being not as cold on a fast 0-80 run.
HP loss will be variable probably based on RPM. It is easily 15 hp at higher RPMs, but probably 5 hp at cruising speed (ie 2000) RPM.

[/quote]On my 96 Maxima, the compressor turns off when I hit 80+ mph. If we have a consensus that AC takes between 5-20 hp on the e60, how much more gas is required with the AC on? Perhaps 1 mile less per gallon?
Theorically, if a 545i (lets say Donv's weight-saving mind candy 545i with AC off) raced with a 550i stock with AC on, the 545i would be equal to or faster than the 550i.

[/quote]I don't think I would have to turn my AC off if he/she didn't. I haven't been able to find any online discussions of parasitic HP loss from AC. I did find one that says AC can cost from 1-2 MPG.

[/quote]Hmmmm i don't quite think so....what happens to the torque. As far as i know torque is not affected.
It's like saying that if i loose a little weight and i run with the ac off and a 545i would run with ac on i would keep up...wich for sure i wouldn't.

[/quote]Other things equal, what matters is torque and weight for straight-line performance. Normally, people talk in terms of HP, not torque. Talking in terms of HP is not a direct (1-1) substitute for talking in terms of torque, but it is an adequate substitute because, generally speaking, increases (or decreases) in torque and increases (or decreases) in HP are closely related. In sum losing weight and turning off the AC are very effective, other things equal, and might result in a slightly slower car beating a slightly faster car in a race.
