so far mechanic looked at it and he said he's got absolutely no idea. he said he never seen anything like that and it must be an external cause.

i'll have to get a new box. he said it's nothing to worry about because apart from box everything else looks good

did someone do some work on your car recently, and maybe lay a light against the box?

work - yes. it has been detailed. as far as the light - not as i know of..

well i will see for sure after i get a new box. if nothing happens to it that would be the proof that it's not the car related damage. if something happens again i can claim it to the warranty.

so far mechanic (2 different ones actually) said that warranty will not believe if i say it happened by itself. they cant think of ANY possible reason this could happen on its own

How about the hood liner? Is there any sign of damage to that? If the box was damaged by heat there would be some evidence as there is very little space when the hood is closed.
If there is no damage to the hood liner, I would begin to suspect some heat was applied to the box when the hood was open or some chemical reaction to the box. Was it OK after the car was detailed? Just a thought.

That's exactly what BMW mechanic said. There is absolutely no damage to the hood liner. He said if that happened while the hood closed it would definitely make a damage since these parts are very close to each other.
so i don't know now what to suspect or not. will replace the box for now

Wow, that's a strange one!! I too think it would have to fluid related, otherwise there would be SOME collateral damage!

My $$ is on the detailer.......I bet he had a halogen lamp, and laid it down on the airbox when he was detailing the engine bay, melting the air box....and of course said nothing about it when the car was picked up.
Makes perfect sense to me

That looks like a classic hot light on plastic burn. At least all the times I've put an old incandescent 'trouble' light near some plastic it ends up looking like that.
