These polls show, among other things, how much more affordable cars are in the US.

If you did this just for Australia (and many Euro countries I guess) the average age group would be much older because a 525i starts at about US$95k on the road here and the 550i runs about US$185k (M5 is about US$240k). The average adult male wage is about US$60k per annum.

Not too many young guys can afford that sort of money for a car.

I work with people from all over the world (it's common to be on a call with 6+ countries represented from Europe, S. America, and Asia -- incl. Australia). Since we are in the auto industry it is common to discuss features on our personal cars. I always feel a little strange talking about having an E60 when I know most of them could never afford it even though we might be at the same "level".

I also wonder how some of the younger folks here can afford what they spend on their cars. I have always spent more that "average", but I didn't have that much when I was younger even with a good job or even now I "only" have a 530(and I'm in the over 40 group).

I'd say a healthy combination of debt-denial, excessive reliance on credit cards, rich parents, low savings, an adjustable rate mortgage and no kids.
