I would go for the E90.. The golf is very nice but in a year you'll see loads of them because they are very affordable..

Outsold the Ford Mondeo iirc. I'd expect the Golf GTi to be rarer, if anything.

browellm is right Dennis, BMW's are one of the most common cars on UK roads. The 5 series was a novelty on the road when I first got mine but now you see them everywhere.
Incredible as it may seem, the Golf GTi will almost certainly be a rarer sight on UK roads.
I have been scouring the net for pics of the E90 and found a whole load of them at Germancarfans. It would appear to be a very colour sensitive design to my eyes and looks better in darker metallics or black.
There is a very good storage pack on the options list for ?210 which includes additional interior storage trays/cubbies, boot luggage net and straps and this rather novel drawer which slides out from under the rear screen: -

So I would recommend Porsche 997 + Audi A4 2.0 tdi, as I don't like the image of 3-series drivers.

I've had 2 E46s in the past before my E60, so I would definitely go for the E90 rather than the Golf. Yes the 3 series would eventually be a common sight but you'll see more Golfs on the road for sure. The GTi might be common too as its getting good reviews from magazines and television programmes like Top Gear etc. Just my opinion
I've read somewhere that Dynamic Drive is not on the E90 as BMW deemed that it was too expensive to implement into the E90 platform considering the numbers they would be selling.

I can't say that my BMW dealer has been flawless either but I would be buying the E90 from a different one anyway.
I'm leaning towards the 320d now. With discount it will be ?29,500 against ?23,460 for the Golf after discount. I'm guessing that residual percentages will be broadly simmilar. The 320d just seems the more "grown up" choice. I just wish I could have got the nav included for under ?30k but that isn't achievable unless I ditch the auto and 17" alloys - not something I want to do.

But I know which one I'd want... Rear-wheel drive 200PS thru' the front wheels is too much

17" alloys are a ?660 option. Pro nav is ?1900. I haven't actually used the nav in my E60 very much so it won't be missed.
As for 200PS in the Golf, the chassis can easily cope with it as can the front wheel drive. Go and test drive one of these cars...... they are an absolute blast to drive. I had a huge grin on my face after my half day demo. The handling is superb and if it does break away at the rear all you have to do is lift off the throttle and the tail steps back in line immediately. Great acceleration and fantastic brakes too.
It's a tough decision.
