$900 sounds like a good start to getting some CSL or LM reps. I remember when run flats first came out their major marketing campaign and commercial was that you could drive 50 miles @ 50mph with a whole the size of a golf ball. Do you guys remember it. The person pulls over, drills a huge whole in the tire, and drives off.

I was lucky to get off the highway with the run flat between the big 'ol hole in the tire and the shake. I couldn't have driven more then 25 mph on the tire and I was 70 miles from home. Plus, I didn't think the tire was really going to protect the rim.
As it turns out, I guess I didn't need to worry about the rim. Dealer called me this morning while I was on way out to pick up the car - the tire went flat so the rim is cracked. So, $500 for a new rim.

2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
Congrats on the new car. She's a real beaut! The 3 has always had a special place in my heart. I plan on replacing my E46 with the newer model, when the time comes AND I intend to change the run flats with real tires and a spare kit.
It's funny how BMW official stance is that you should get a spare. Why don't they start providing one? I wonder if your conversation with them could be used as fodder by a capable lawyer.....

I hear a lot of negativity against run-flats here, but re-reading the first post - he hit a pothole at 85mph and the outcome being that he only needed a new tire (and alignment). Without run-flats, this could easily have been one of those posts showing how well the front part of the car absorbed all the impact of the crash while the passenger area protected the occupants and all are safe and well but the car's a write-off. OK, maybe the tires weren't as driveable as the run-flat commercials made out they would be (50 miles at 50 miles per hour), but we are talking about a positive run-flat story here, not a negative one.
~DD ... running summer and winter run-flats and happy with them (smooth ride and not noisy)

Don't forget he also needed a new rim. I'm not sure why you feel a non run flat tire would have made it worse. I ran over a rail road spike on the freeway doing 80mph and it put a whole the size of my thumb and shattered the wheel like it was hit by a point blank gun shot and i was able to pull over just fine. The difference is it only cost half as much to replace everything. I guess they are good for small things like running over a nail or what not but in a major impact your still SOL.
