adaptive headlamps.
I have been reading about these types of headlights but I am confused about all the abbreviations used. I have a 2008 E61 530D M sport and have noticed my headlights go up and down when I start the car up. Can anybody enlighten me on anything else they are meant to do? Thanks Paneuro.

Do they go side to side as well? Adaptive headlights should turn left and right when you turn the steering wheel. I also believe they move slightly up and down depending on the speed you are driving. Also they go up and down based on weight in the car.

What are the abbreviations you need clarification about? Every industry has it's acronyms, but sometimes we take using them for granted because we know what they mean and assume everyone else does.

They auto-level every time you start the car. If you have someone turn the steering wheel while you stand out front, you'll see them aim side to side as well.

Hi, thanks for the reply. As my car is normally parked facing a wall I am aware of the up/down movement but at no time have I noticed any sideways movement? Is it possible this could be a coding problem as I have the Carly tool and have coded several options before?
With regards the acronyms I will have to come back with some of them in a further post. thanks Paneuro

When you start the car they only move up and down then level for check. You will not see it moving side to side unless you turn your wheel while in Drive. If the motor was broke or somethings not working in the adaptive system you will get no movement and the green light on the light switch will blink indicating an error in the system.

Hi, I am unable to put it in drive as its a manual gearbox unless I jack up the back wheels or get it on a rolling road! Any ideas? Thanks Paneuro.

You don't need to be moving. Just start the car and idle it. Then move the steering wheel back and forth. You should see the beam shift back and forth. If it doesn't, then as stated above, the mechanism that operates them may be broken.

OK, I will wait until its dark and try it. I will let you know how it goes, will be about another hour or so. I not sure I want to do anything about it if its not working as I have no error messages, I could be opening a big can of worms and I don't want that! thanks Paneuro

Hi, I have tried starting the car and it did the up/down movement but when I tried turning the wheel from side to side there was nothing so either I have not got adaptive steering or something is not working. I have had this car for around 4 years and have not had any error messages about light problems other than having to replace bulbs so I think I will leave well alone. If it ain't broke don't fix it. thanks Paneuro.
