My take on the changes is that BMW changed the Servotronic (speed sensitive power assist) boost mapping to provide a little less boost at low speeds. This should not affect in any way the variable ratio part of the Active Steering system. The car should still turn in like a go-cart at low speeds; but it'll take a little more effort to actually turn the wheel.

I have no prior experience driving BMWs, and I've only had my 2005 545i for 2 weeks, but I too feel that it wanders all over the road at low speeds, a tendency that I attributed to the bad roads here in New York City.
