Default Active Steering Malfunction

Just got an "Active Steering Malfunction" message. Stopped the car and restarted the car, same message. Parked the car in garage overnight. Topped off power steering fluid. Started the car. No more warning message, All System OK. Shouldn't I get a power steering fluid low message instead of the malfunction message ?

Your fix (power steering fluid top-off) is correct.

No, you do not get a fluid low message.

Took the car to a local BMW repair shop (Coast Motro Werk - BMW/Mini Service in Irvine, CA. I highly recommend them) anyway to find out what could be the cause. They found so many fault codes on my car (must be from my last smog check) that could cause the warning message and cleared all of them for me free. :-)

did you do the steering reset, where you turn the wheel all the way left and then right? maybe try that after disconnecting the battery again for a little bit??

I had to replace my Active Steering Control Module at about 60,000 miles.

$2000 repair.

There is no fluid sensor for Steering as far as I'm aware. There are several sensors though. I worked on a friends' car to take out AFS altogether vs. paying for a new unit ($1200) ripping the center console apart to replace the unit etc. Now the steering is very tight like the M5. AFS sucks. If mine ever goes south will do the same. But you need to correctly diagnose the issue because it could be yaw-rate sensors and so forth. The AFS,DSC,DD are all interconnected. It's like a domino effect.
