Wondering if anyone has had similar issue. When I start my 2004 530i, I get a waring that says Active Steering Malfunction. If I try to drive the car, the steering is very tight as if the Active Steering is kicking in already at low speeds or idle. If I drive even less than a couple blocks the warning and the tightness go away. Any advice? Could this be a sensor?

Check fluid level ...If low, top off and check for leaks.

How is your battery? Could be signs of the battery on the way out as well. Is this happening frequently? Have you tried resetting your AS?

Sorry for the super duper late responses, I lost my log in info for a while. Anyway the battery and fluid is fine. I was thinking steering angle sensor or speed sensor. Any ideas?

OP,

You're still having this issue almost two years later? I had this recently and found my fluid level was indeed low. I flushed as much as I could and topped off with Pentosin CHF-11s for the dealer. The issue has not returned. Not sur what is happening in your case though. Good luck.

I had that problem when I drove in heavy rain. I got an error message, and it felt like there was no power steering, Once it dried out, no issues. My issue is probably due to a wiring short of some kind.

I think I finally narrowed it down to a lateral acceleration sensor. Basically the car starts out a zero miles per hour with the active steering on, only when you drive and get to about 3rd gear the sensor resets itself and normal power steering kicks in. Active steering kicks back in around 80 miles per hour. It's a very expensive sensor but I think I'm going to go for it.
