only official service????
Greetings Comrade;
This happened to me ( 2004 525i ) Low battery.... the dealership had it for 2 days before they could figure it out. They had to reboot the computer and put in new codes. The active steering was a new option in 2004...... I would check your voltage at the battery.

As the other replies indicate, this is one of those messages that may or may not be something that the dealer has to fix. In addition to the low battery issue that was already mentioned, I wanted to add that I received this message in conjunction with a low tire (TPM) message.
A front tire was low so the active steering didn't initialize properly when I first pulled out of my garage. I moved the car only enough to hook up my compressor to fill the tire but it was enough to screw up the AS initialization, I think.
Once I got the tire back up to pressure, I turned the car off and back on again and the message went from an AS error to "Active steering initializing" and after about 30 seconds or so, all messages cleared and I was good to go...

This happened to me once.. I live in Malaysia and the roads here are less than glorious.
Hit a bit mother of a pothole on the front left wheel and immediatly after that, the very same warning popped up.
Reached home after that, turned off the car. Head off to work the next day and it was gone..
What would normally prompt this msg to appear? Besides a battery problem.. Like something actually wrong with the Active Steering System?

I have had these messages once every year or so. They are generally cleared by turning the car on and off. Another option is while the car is running turn the steering wheel from one side to the the other. I have never been required to take the car to the dealership to get this fixed.
