Are you saying you turned the wheel but nothing happened or are you saying the wheel wouldn't turn?
An active steering failure is supposed to still allow the car to be steered like a car without AS. (There is still a mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels -- it's not a "steer by wire" type system.)

AS failure gives a strange offset to the steering wheel. You drive straight, but the steering wheel is 15 degrees to the right (for e.g.). I belive he got confused by this offset. (Just my opinion)
This is a known problem that was fixed by a software upgrade back in january.

I love Active Steering and, luckily, never failed.
I felt same negative experience (it seems to not be sure to fully control the car) at high speed in windy condition but my feeling was that this was due to car lateral shaping offering a resistance to wind, and not at all due to AS.

I was not exaggerating at all, the wheel would NOT turn. I had a recent software update and my car is a February 04 build so I assume the so-called soft ware fix in Janaury had already been applied to my car.

THAT IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE!
The steering was supposed to be mechanicaly linked as a fail safe!
Keep us posted about what the dealer says.
Also, receive my appologies for not trusting you 100% in the first place.

Guys
Excuse my ignorance, is active steering the feature where steering wheel tightens as your car speeds up? If so, I thought it was a standard feature on all E60 (at least I think it is on all Hong Kong E60s).
Thx

AS cahnges the ratio of the steering wheel to the wheels. so when you are parking, for example, you only turn the wheel about 3/4 to get full lock not the usual 1.5 turns or whatever it is.
Cheers.
