Okay not sure on this one, but I got the Active Steering Malfunction light come on yesterday when I started my car, it wasnt a cold start or anything just appeared. Well I decided to run a few errands because I knew how to reset it later.

Well I finally got to a place where I could reset it by doing the turning of the wheels then turning off your car then back on. The message never went away. So i decided to check the fluid, from the dip stick it looks at a very reasonable level of fluid in there so I dont think that would be it.

I let the car sit overnight and still the dang message is there, any other tips or tricks I can try? Maybe I do need to top it off if it is that sensitive. I dont know..

Active steering in the earlier years of the e60 is just a bummer. I traded in my 545 because I just thought it was flat out dangerous.

On my 2004 car, I would sometimes get that message and yes, a top off of fluid took care of it...

Now this may be a stupid question by reading the dipstick it looks normal. By topping it off would I fill that damn thing to the brim? Also when that happened did the AS disable? Thanks

What year and model?

My AS warning came on once, when the battery was nearly discharged. However, the warning icon disappeared, and steering returned to normal, when I drove about 20 minutes and the alternator charged the battery. Is your battery fresh and fully charged?

I love my Active Steering but it is not something you should ignore if you get error messages. Dealer visit...

Well I took it to the dealer and to get my service, and he said that it was more than likely one of the sensors. He said there is two sensors either one would cost around 600 dollars to fix, since it is labor intensive.

Oh, out of warranty (2004) . Yep, I guess these are the hits we take when we pay to play. I love my car, though not sure if I'll keep her after the lease is up. These cars can easily cost $3k-$4k/year to maintain/repair based on past experience. For that and only another $500-$600/month more I can always have a new car under warranty, so I'll probably just be leasing forever, ugh . But seriously, this is something you really should have fixed, and it could be more than just a sensor.....or not, but until the techs take a look, no one will know for sure. These cars are so darn complex, but as stated earlier, early AS was not what it is today.
