Active Steering

How does one tell if the car has active steering? i believe my 2005 545i has it, but I didnt know if there was a for sure way to tell. It seems when I am going slower and turning the car turns pretty darn quick with little wheel movement.

I think you do have active steering...get in a car that for sure doesn't have it and try it. Or if there is a dealer near you they can tell if you have AS.
It for sure feels "different" when you turn the wheel around corners, it is like you can cut the corner way shorter with little steering wheel movement, i believe that would define active steering. Thanks!

If I recall correctly from my 545 there will be a dedicated pump in the engine compartment for the active steering. I think it's pretty clearly marked. Take a look and see what you find. If you car does have AS you'll see the unit.
The easier answer is that as your car is a 2005, if it also has the sport pack, then you do indeed have active steering. Assuming you have a US car, for the 2005 model year active steering was standard on sport equipped cars. On my 2007, AS was not part of the sport pack (can't recall what they did in 06). It could, of course, be that AS was ordered on a non-sport car. The sport pack isn't the only factor.
So: if you a 2005 US model, and you have the sport pack, you have active steering. On a non sport car, you'll need to look for the other signs as above (principally the control unit in the engine compartment, or the very obvious difference in low speed maneuverability)

When opening the hood, on the left side closest the front, there is indeed an entire set-up labelled "active steering". It's the nucleus for oogles of steel lines.

Probably the easiest way to figure it out if you have AS or not is to start the car and count how many turns the wheel makes from lock to lock (while standing still). I don't remember the exact amount of turns it should take but I think it's 2 or less for active steering cars.

My Ride: 2004 Blacked out 530i, Carbon Fiber Pillars, Carbon Fiber Emblems (Wheels, Steering Wheel and Hood/Trunk). Blacked out kidney Grill, Smoked side marker lights, 15mm Rear Spacers, K&N Filter, Window Tint, Navigon Syst. Breyton Front Lip. Bilistein Coil Over Suspension Front & Rear Droped 1.5" Genuine M5 Pedal set. Mtechnik side skirts, RPI Exhaust.
Your model has it, trust me. And the alignment is about 350.00 at the BMW dealer unless you can find someone who works on Beemers like i did and pay 120.00. They need some kind of special machine.
