Whenever I get a loaner with X-Drive I realize how great active steering is. BMW's with X-Drive feel like you are driving a truck ( even the 330XI)
My 2005 545ia handles so well with active steering, I would never get another car without it.To me it's the top feature of this car. 152,000 miles on it and it still handles smooth as a cat. All you need are 4 good snow tires to enjoy this car in the winter.

I like it, though it does add a mechanical abstraction to the steering system that isn't present in cars without it. Just a theory, but I wonder if it is better suited to something like the 5 series, being bigger and heavier and already more isolated than the 3 series, and stands to benefit more from the agility imparted by a quicker ratio at lower speeds. I also love the feeling of stability at higher speeds that comes from the lower gear ratio at those speeds.
Just test drive it and see what you like

Thinking of getting a 535i and I see BMW now offers Active Steering as a stand alone option and you don't have to get the sports pkg any longer to order it. I don't believe it is possible to get A/S with X Drive, correct?. Let's put it this way than, A/S enhances the handling of a BMW to the point that it is a must in my next purchase. I got hooked on it during my test drive and everyone that drives the car loves the feature. I guess what I am pointing out to many BMW buyers that order X Drive is, to drive it both ways, try it with X Drive and than drive it with A/S and see what you prefer. 4 snows do me well in the winter on the few days you really NEED either them or X drive, where as A/S does me better on each and every day I drive my car regardless of the weather. Buyers Choice. To me it is no contest.
