So as I posted previously the front tires are pretty badly cupped & roar horribly. New tires are ordered, but I decided to drive around for a little while this afternoon. Got an error message that the active steer is having a problem. The idrive message was accompanied by a little steering wheel symbol with an exclamation point. Could this be related to the cupping issues? Like could the front tires be cupped so badly that they are preventing the active steer from working properly, thereby making idrive give an error message for it? Also, we found an independent shop who specializes in MB, BMW, etc in Winston Salem. They're listed with bimrs.org as well. Anyway, would you trust an independent shop to troubleshoot i drive issues? I was thinking I'd have the tires installed and have the alignment done and then see if the active steer error message clears itself. Does that sound like the right idea?

I guess I have to wonder, though, why you consider the error msg. to be an iDrive issue since it's for Active Steering.

I recently had multiple error messages happening every couple of days from any number of systems. Active steering, tire pressure, dynamic drive and control system failure. Took it to the shop and it turns out that the previous owner had installed an after market battery that was not powerful enough for the car, and the result was every so often any number of system failure messages would arise. battery was replaced ( not cheap by the way
) and all is fine. Something to think about. GL

I doubt they have the ability to do so. BMW does not AFAIK supply independent shops with the latest version of Progman.

sorry for the confusion - I meant that i drive is giving me a message stating that active steer has a problem. did not mean to imply that idrive is the problem. my question was whether or not severely cupped tires could affect active steer enough to cause i drive to tell me active steer has a problem.
thanks!

Check to see if your steering fluid is low (or marginally low.) If it is, it can cause the iDrive warning...
hi
if it says turn off engine and restart to insilise this is your tyres i had same problem, get your new tyres fitted park with wheels facing straight and turn engine on the steering wheel will turn left and right few times to reprogram or whatever it does then the message will clear,
hope this helps
