Info from my 2 cars: 2003 530SE- had top air flaps, 2007 535dSE- doesnt. Never seen fitted on any Msports, I have been wondering if I could retrofit to my 535d and whether there would be any worthwhile gains. Any thoughts from anyone?

Mine doesn't have this - I did see some YouTube videos of E39's that had it.

mine has this.
lets the engine warm up quicker, so you should see a little decrease in fuel consumption, especially over the winter months. If you ever go to london in the winter, check out the grills of black cabs- they retrofit their own flaps- they put newpaper- YES NEWPAPER over the radiator, to help reduce cooling and therefore increase engine temperature.

+1 I have documentation that states cars with Msport have to have coding done that disables this function.

My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny.
2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
They are in the cars that carry wives or girlfriends as passengers...

Hello, I have a 2007 E60 530XI (built February 2007) I bought used. My car runs cool when it gets cold out. It seems like it takes forever to warm up when the temps get down in the 20s or cooler. It is like the thermostat is stuck open. I did change the thermostat with new one but, it still runs cool. I did check the temperature sensors and they seem to fine. Also, in investigating how the cooling system works, I found out that my car does not have Active Air Flaps and I was wondering if my car should my car have had them?

However unsure if it works without coding. Can you share your findings or does anyone else know if to active them ?
There is no sensor that detects if they are open or not. Its just a solonoide that keeps them closed when they are in closed position that is. Once they open the airflow keeps them open.
I find it a cool feature and want my engine to warmup faster during short drives.
