Changing fenders is not necessary. What is necessary is changing the tire sizes. I just put OEM 166 M5 Wheels on my 04 545i, much like a lot of other members have done.
Front Tire Size: 245/35/19
Rear Tire Size: 275/30/19
No issues with rubbing whatsoever.

If you put non-factory items on your car in Germany, you need to have the mod verified by "TUV", the German testing authority, and then entered formally into the cars papers. This includes a paper-based technical verification, drive tests, and have the car checked up on a ramp.
I had the following formally verified and approved by TUV:
OEM 19" M5 M166 rims
Front Tire Size: 245/35/19
Rear Tire Size: 275/30/19
Hope that gives you the peace of mind you are looking for!

+1 Confirmed, no problem at all
NO problem at all with the new tires sizes mentioned above. WAIT, the problem is you waste more gas trying to show off your new rims!

================================================== ============
You will need new tire sizes for the 166 to fit the non M5 e60:
245/35/19 Front
285/30/19 Rear
... I had no rubbing at all with these tires: 285/30/19 (rear), and 245/35/19 (front) tire sizes, with my former BMW OEM ///M Aerodynamic kit, and I still have no rubbing now with the new wider e60 M5 front and rear fenders.
I am considering going up in front tire size from the 245 to the M5 size of the 255 tire size beings my front M5 fenders are wider now, and should not scrub, but need to check to see if my standard e60 suspension will handle that larger tire size with bottoming out, does anyone here at the forum know the answer to that question?)
Thanks in Advance!!
