[quote name='MALEKMAN' date='Nov 29 2004, 03:47 PM']STOP!! and please do not refer me to FAQ (I know this topic has been covered there)!! This has become a tug of war between BMW NA, the dealers (Fairfax BMW and Sterling BMW) and me. I was scheduled for NAV retrofit (545I, built 1/2004) tomorrow at Fairfax BMW but got a call from the service rep, telling me that it can't be done since my car doesn't have the pre-wiring.
I called BMW NA and was told that it can't be done since I don't have the option "6UA". I called Sterling BMW and they tell me that it can be done if I have SAT Radio pre-wiring (which I do).
The service rep called me back, telling me that the only way to find out for sure is to look for a "plug" somewhere around the dash! Plug means; yes and NO Plug means; no.
I also understand that even if a car has the option "6UA" it would not be listed on the window sticker. So, can you see my frustration? I spent more than $60,000.00 on this car and can't get an answer worth a damn. E60 is a work in progress and we are the guinae pigs.
I will take my car in tomorrow but need all the help you guys can provide. Thanx.

Did a Google and came up with the following interesting post. Read down to the post by "Ryan"...

http://forums.e60.net/lofiversion/index.php/t2124.html

Gives a service bulletin # . Sounds like cars came pre-wired from 10/03-12/03, and after that you had to have the code or get the nav. This guy says it was on his window sticker...

Good luck!

de_smet_h, I'm afraid I don't have answer for you. From reading this earlier thread, either your car was built before 12/03 and automatically came pre-wired, or if it was built after 12/03, you need the 6au option to have it done. You don't have any detail about your car posted, so I assume that it is post 12/03 build without the 6au option. If your not sure, check the inside of the drivers door for build date (will read MM/YY like 01/04 for mine) and if it is post 12/03, call BMWNA with your VIN. They should be able to tell you if you have the 6au option. Without it, sounds NAV retrofit is not an option.

Instructions from a 10/04 PDF from BMW TIS indicates Nav can be retrofit WITHOUT the factory prep kit. I just wonder if BMW will stick to the $1800 cost previously mandated to dealers

This is a thread from another topic which has a PDF file indicating that you do not need to the pre-wiring. I have given this to my dealer and am waiting to hearback as well.

Spoke to the parts manager today at my dealership. He advises me that they called BMW Technical and BMW Parts and advised that the retrofit can not be done unless you have the 6UA option already installed on your car.

Has anyone found anything else on this?

I spoke to the BMW parts department and was told that 6ua option was needed for the NAV retrofit. I also called BMWNA and was given the same answer. I then asked BMWNA about the retrofit kit SA6609 (reverenced above for cars without 6UA option), and was told that this was not available in the US.
I've been discussing this with a couple of the mechanics who I have a good relationship with, and based on the instructions mentioned above it possibly can be done. One of their concerns is cutting off the sharkfin antena without damaging the car. The antena must be cut off, and reconnected to connect the GPS aerial cable. The cable is then routed through the headliner, through the driver's footwell, and then to the center console. As far as I can tell, this is what the 6UA option is.
I plan to wait a few weeks to see if a bulletin comes out addressing the retrofit on cars without 6ua update. If this issue is not addressed, and I can confirm that the installation of the GPS aerial cable will actually update my car with the 6UA option, I will ask the service manager to allow the mechanic (guy who thinks it can be done), install the wiring.
It's a long shot, I want NAV and I would like to take advantge of the $1,800 offer by BMW. I think this offer is good through May, 2005.
