Had taken my car for the 1 year service a couple of weeks ago. I just noticed that the paperwork that the dealer gave back indicated that they replaced the Engine Oil with 5W30. Is this normal? I thought BMW recommended 0W30 Synthetic oil?
Any opinions? Has the dealership messed up? Inquiring mind wants to know...

totaly the same thing here..... the same happened to me as well...
and I believe we should be getting 0W30....
maybe it is more expensice and dealers to do have frequently.... the 5W30 they can use on most of the engine.....
the 0W30 is maybe more special for certain engines.... who knows.
but this should not me happening at BMW dealers....
and yes, 0W30 is better for 545i and 530i

I've been using 5w-30 Mobil 1 full synthetic oil for over 10 years in all my cars. I'm sure it's safe for the kind of driving that we do in USA.

0 weight is probably more appropriate for cold weather since it would provide near instant lubrication. I'd imagine with the approaching summer, the 5 weight is fine, and possibly more appropriate and better-protecting in the hot weather we'll be having. Most older german car manuals don't stipulate one "right" weight, and give more guidance to follow with regard to conditions and weather.

Here in Germany the BMW dealer uses 5W30 all year round. We had some very low temp. this past winter. (minus 15 degrees C. or more)

Here in Finland the local dealer uses 0W40, as it is supposed to be the best grade for extreme winter conditions. In Southern Finland the night time lows can go below -20C in Jan/Feb, and many people do trips to Northern Finland where night time lows go below -30C.

Interesting.
I maybe have to put in a half to a litre of oil this summer and I was also wondering
what oil the factury have used.
I looked into Castrols homepage and I thaught the right oil would be
Castrol SLX LL04 0W-30. It's a BMW recommended oil.
For Heikki: see this link.

That might be the original factory oil. But I went to Laakkonen service to buy a liter of oil just in case I need to top up and they sold me a can of Shell 0W40. I assume they use it when doing scheduled oil changes...
