Hi everyone,

I have a 07 550i. Has about 46k miles on it (still under warranty) plus I have the Platinum extended warranty to 6/100 and I a going to the dealer this week for some other fixes. I get a hard shift from 2-3rd in DS and Manual mode and some idrive updates.

I also get almost a diesel type of sound when at idle, or more like a tick type of sound. I took a short video and it can be heard here. Maybe this is normal for the V8.

Thanks for any insight.

Mark

When was the last time you changed the oil?

My car, also a 2007 550i, begins to sound like that about 6K miles after my oil change. After the change, everything is nice and quiet again (like a Lexus). The oils is extremely dirty after just 6K miles, which begs to ask why does BMW recommends changing oil every 15K miles?

What does your iDrive say?

Yes, I always use synthetic - Mobil 1 5W30.

Full synthetic is required for these cars.

Where does it say that?

The Castrol OEM oils is 5W30. I am not a mechanical engineer, but the measure of kinematic viscocity for summer and winter applications is pretty clear to me.

You were right. I checked the Mobil 1 website and they do recommend 0W40. I wonder why? Maybe the European standards are more stringent than the US SAE standards when it comes to viscosity measurement. 5W30 in Europe may correspond to 0W40 in the US.

I plan on changing my oil every 6K miles (and not 15000 as recommended by BMW), so the super low viscosity 0W40 oil would really make no difference in my opinion. But thats a risk I am willing to take.

When my oil was low, I called the dealer to find out what oil to top off with and I was told 5w-30

0-40 is the recommend Mobil 1 oil. 5-30 for castrol. Mobil one has a thicker 5-30 than BMW likes, and the 0-40 is the correct viscosity. If you look on the bottles, Mobil 1 5-30 is NOT bmw rated, 0-40 is BMW rated. It also says "european car formula" on the bottle.
