Even though there's an explanation why this is happening, it doesn't make it acceptable IMHO. I can live with mediocre navigation/computer software (idrive) and other stuff like that, but when it comes to mechanical issues it should be superb. Getting a 'slam' when you're coming to a stop is bull crap and I certainly don't expect it from a car as expensive as a 550i. You don't get it in the 530i, 540i and certainly not in Jap cars that I've been in

The software fix doesn't fix it so it sounds like we've got to live with it...for now..

Still, despite this problem I love my 550i

Sport mode or normal?

Ok, now I must show my ignorance. I recently acquired a 07 550i 6 speed manual. I have not noticed a sport mode button. I had one on my E39 M5 but not on the 550i. Is this just a Steptronic thing or have I yet to discover a pleasant option?

From yr past cars you owned a MB 320. THEN after a 2 BMWs.
What is yr comments between the 2 brands ????
I've replied to you via PM.

In short, I wouldn't bag one against the other as they're both great cars just targetted at different driving styles. If I was more conservative in my driving then I'd go for the E-class. However, from what I've heard the new MB E550 offers a superb blend of sports & comfort via it's improved dynamic suspension. It certainly has far more grunt then the 550i, faster in the straights and grips more in the turns. Have not driven one yet to confirm this... oh and I think it's cheaper too!

Speaking to some friends and after reading some motor mags comparisons, I think you'd be choosing BMW between the 2.0lt - 3.5lt (twin turbo!!) mark, but then you'd might want to consider the MB V8 E550 over the BMW 550i.

I suspect it's just a steptronic thing. When I'm on Sports mode I can use the gear stick to shift up and down on the gears. But, I can also leave it on Sports Auto (displayed as 'DS') and what it does is extend the time spent on the lower gears, to max out power output per gear I guess...

The Sport Mode is referring to cars with Steptronic. However, cars that are equipped with SMG have the sport button. Hope this clears everything up.

Mine is more like a hard shift - no matter how easy I am on the gas, that shift kind of kicks hard -as opposed to the 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6 shift where you can almost feel the trans slipping.

I know my car is brand new but whenever I come to either an abrupt stop or come to a light the downshifts aren't smooth. In fact, tonight it felt like the car wanted to stall out. I had the same problem on my 540i as well. Do you think this could be a software issue? Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks!
I'm with BMW of North America, LLC. I've passed this message on to a BMW NA Customer Relations Representative who will be in touch with you soon.

You did not state the number of miles driven. I have ~9000 miles on my 07 550i (June Del). It originally had a similar issue when approaching a stop the transmission would downshift erratically. That problem has disappeared as my mileage increased. It was around 5000 miles where it stopped. I figure it must have been breaking in. I had no software updates till just last week (V24.02) so it was not software related. My suggestion is to give it some time. If it does not work its way out then take in it.
