Very good Grasshopper. I haven't seen the C&D results for the 750i. Are they brand new or did I doze too long? I am going to apply my questimation skills soon.
Here's something interesting we haven't though of before. Zero to 60's for the X5 4.8 and X5 4.4 are 5.9 and 6.8--a difference of .9 in favor of the 4.8. And, the 4.8 has the higher rear end and weighs a little more. Hummm! Well, OK, then, the 550i should go to 60 in 5.2 - .9 = 4.3. So, that won't happen because that's essentially as fast as the M5 in the current test. So, I wonder what gives with the X5 figures.

well technically speaking the 4.8is is 90% an m-car so it should be noted that the engine is tuned to give very high torque at low rpms, plus the gearing is much shorter in 1st and 2nd (read teh specs to find out) ... it even gets to 100km 0.6 seconds quicker than the 4.6is

What you say may explain the difference in the two X cars. I wasn't totally interested in the idea. I am slightly curious about the 1st and 2nd gears for the two cars. But, I am not interested enough to look. Do you know what they are off the top of your head?
I think I have recovered. You are welcome B32. 550i? How about even an M5? Admitedly, the M5 is in the ball park with the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times of some of them. And, it appears to be going faster than all at the end of the 1/4.

I don't think the Carrara GT is a 911 class. You left out the 911 GT1, GT2, and turbo. I believe these three are faster than the M5 in all ranges.

I, too, drive above the speed limit only to avoid blind spots and traveling in packs. This way, I am more alert and proactive and not blocking others who in an emergency.

Yes I was able to beat a C911, it was not an S neither a 4S... it took place between 2 red lights and not on a high way. i jumped first i beleive he was not expecting the BMW to behave in this manner. however, before reaching the other red light he was gaining speed and it was wheel to wheel when we both hit the brakes hard. while we were at the red light he opened his window and asked me about the engine of my car, i can tell you that he was very surprised.
Right I left those 4 out on purpose. I wasn't, and still, am not sure what car he was talking about. And, I don't know the Porsche models super well so, yes, the C GT may not be a 911.

IMO the 550 will be slightly faster to 60 than the 545,but maybe not as much as we would like.I'll list some reasons why it will only be marginally faster to 60
1-550 will be traction limited due to the extra torque and horsepower.Starts on my 545 are already a problem with traction.
2-M1 gear ratio in the steptronic(4.17) is too low for the 545 & 550.It is more suited to the 525 & 530 because of the much lower torque & horsepower figures.Ideally should be about 3.50.
3-Standard tires for the 550 sport & non sport are the same as on the 545 which is already traction limited.A set of BFG drag radials on both cars would benefit the 550 more because of the higher power ratings.
After 60 mph I believe the 550 would steadily pull away from the 545.

as soon as I get to drive my 550 I will tell you! I know how the 545 was and the SA stated that the 550 would be noticeably better! We'll see

I don't know about the 750i not beating the 545i. It has the bigger engine, and on the street, I think it may even overtake the 545i since the Mags test are just point seconds apart. I'm still waiting for a 550i test result from anyone.

Me too.

I am not sure about this one, but you may be right. When my car hooks up, the 4.17 feels good.

I hope they don't pull away from my 545i at least after the Dinan CAI. The 550's and some others are in my sights. But, darn, you gave my "secret" thought away. If I had it to do over again, then I would not upgrade to 19" wheels since neither BFG's or Nittos are available in 19." I would get 18" BBS wheels, which would be even lighter than my style 101's, and would have BFG's on my car at least some of the time. Actually, I am thinking of selling my 101's/PS2's if my warranty-replaced new PS2's don't hook up better than my old ones. Then, ....
