Just my two cents. Penneta has it right on the modding side.

If you aren't modding and intend to keep for awhile, the 550 is likely the better choice from a reliability and maintenance standpoints. The V8 should last longer.

As for fuel consumption, the 535 is better but driven hard all these advantages disappear.

As for handling, 250 lbs won?t make the car much more tossable. Having driven the lighter inline six versus the V8, I didn?t notice much of difference in the handling department. In fact, the 550 had more presence and felt better. In the end, if you want tossable get a M3 or Cayman.

Overall, I'm biased for the 550 and get a kick out of the big V8 rumble.

My vote would be the 550 - nothing beats a V8. I have a 07 550 sport/6 speed. The car is very fast and has great handling. A super driver!

My 550I Sport's lateral grip when equipped with max summer performance tires astounds me. It just sticks.
No offense, you can call the E60 anything, but the only thing any E60 is not is "tossable." The 1 series is tossable, the 3 series is tossable. The 5 series is more like a Nascar vehicle; big and not so tossable.

I will say that the 550 sounds better and has a more traditional power curve and when its on the cam its a screamer and it is fast and it feels fast. The 535 has a flat torque curve and its exhaust is very quiet so its speed is deceptive and not as much fun to drive in that respect.
Once you flash the ECU, the 535 is a freakin beast and the flat torque curve blips by in a second, but if you are not going to flash the ECU, I would recommend the 550.

So what do you guys think?

There's a reason why BMW dropped the twin turbo in the F10.
