our near-new (2000 miles) 550 sport is a great driving experience but returns dismal fuel consumption. Since 1954 have always maintained high average speeds on long trips - but now reduced to geriatric rates - 30 and 70 mph returning 12.6 to 21 mpg respectively. with just 18. 5 gal in the tank trip range is a major issue. have heard that mpg improves with miles so seek inputs from other owners on this. will a good old 'italian tune up' do the trick?

2008 550i, 10,000 miles. Did a roundtrip of 600 miles at 78 to 85 mph basically all freeway, average 24.7mpg. Around town getting 17ish.

I believe it would get 26mpg at 70, but doubt if I'll ever know!

About 1800 miles on my 550i.
I avg ~18mph city driving and around 13mpg. Sometimes if I do a little bit of highway driving, my avg goes up to 15mpg.

The question is what constitutes city driving... Roleez, what is your avg mph for 'city' driving?

Between 25-30 mph. 4-way stops in neighborhoods, traffic light after traffic light, etc. Shifting at 2500 rpm, no higher. If cruising a steady 30 mph, I'll be in 4th gear. No lighting takeoffs from stops. Just driving at a granny pace basically just to get through town.

Do a search on this. Use 550 or 545. there was a big debate on the real MPG. The consensus was 17 on average mixed, low to mid 20's for highway. Anything too much different takes alot of work and frankly to get prius style MPG you might as well not have purchased an 550 and looked at a I6 or D model. You don't buy this car because you want great numbers.
