HEY GUYS, I was analyzing the air intake box of my 550 and found the surprise that there are 2 air filters one that gets replaced every xxx miles and another one on the top cover that is glued umm weird, I would think is to trap any particules on entering the engine but 2 filters?? maybe is for sound? I dont know but seems that the less restricting the better airflow and more power does anyone know if the 545 has 2 filters too?

Is the setup different in the 750i? I've noticed it had 2 separete intake boxes.

The 545i also has the double filters. I recently installed the K&N replacement filter and also noticed the other filter that was glued to the top cover. I am very curious to if we could take the top one off?
I am even more curious as to how the new intake kit for th 545i from Gruppe M will resolve the dual filters issue? Maybe they'll just replace the whole top cover with their own.

Choi000- Thanks for providing your feedback. I am intersted in installing a K&N, but was worried about dirt particles getting by the K&N as indicated by others in other BMW sites.
If this has a second filter, this should filter out those particles that get by the K&N.

Not sure guys, I have had CAI and never had a problem with any of my cars. I removed the top second filter, IMHO is seems it will provide a better flow as the cavity there is huge and there is no filter there to stop the more air to come in. I think that filter is to suppress the noise but who knows, I paid close attention and maybe i can hear a bit more of a growl..
I want a bit more growl of this car without exchanging exhaust, etc.. maybe a K7N filter will do but not sure if the 545 filter will fit..umm let me check with BMW parts...
another thing ,have you guys hear anything about the valve in the exhaust.. the 3 series has soemthing like that and hear that deactivating it and leaving the flap open all time (as an aftermarket exhaust) will give you a bit more growl...

Here's a thread about the valve in the second muffler--I tried holding it open with a turnbuckle and S hook, and didn't notice any sound difference, so undid the mod.
