That said I can get 30mpg if going 60. Makes me think of the rationale for the old 55 speed limits

one item to consider. The 550 is an absolute pig in city driving and if using winter grade gas. With a heavy foot I've seen 14 mpg. Best city is 18 and driving behavior makes a difference. I'd imagine the 6 gets much better results in the city.

My Ride: 2007 525xi, all stock. Seems pretty basic
My 2005 330xi got about 17 around town but now my 2007 525xi gets 20+. I did have a heavier foot with the 3 series. I do miss that giddyup!

And about not buying a 550 because of the V8... even if you do average 14 compared to the 19 I get in the city, you're missing out on 92.5 miles per tank (compared to the I6), which would be roughly $600 a year more for fuel (for the 550).
The difference in power between the I6 and the V8 is priceless.

That is why I love myu n52 engine 530i 33-34 mpg on the freeway/highway all the time with a/c on or windows down.
You guys could try increase your tire pressure-mine is 42 all around-for many reasons but it also helps with gas mileage.
