It's great to hear opinions from someone that has experience with both. That says a lot for the 550. Did your 535 have a tune? I'm sure stock vs stock the V8 would have an easy edge.

Only issue I have had on my 535 was the water pump. Other then that it has been problem free. Plus 550's are a lot slower then a modded 535.

Only issue for me HPFP, but covered with and without warranty

New model HPFP have also been running great, but now I have installed the AEM 320 to run highter % of E85

These cars are capable of SO much more POWER than the 550 (IMHO), and yes my brother owned and 2009 550 and I driven it many times, until he traded it for a 335i as I always BLEW him away

Very happy with My car, NEVER looked back

Check this out

Had a chance to do a before/after dyno comparison on my 535i N54 the other day. I'm running the BMS DCI, a custom catback system, and a $100 inline fuel pump ( AEM 320, custom to fit my lines ), holding hi and consistent PSI and factory dp, IC, etc...

To start, we, ( Terry ) ran 91 octane bone stock. Then we added the JB4 G5 ISO, BMS Flash, and 60% E85. Did a few adaption runs on map 5 which peaked out around 410rw. Then we kicked it over to map 7 and pushed it up a bit further. For kicks we ( T ) dialed boost up a bit further using map 6 and picked up a bit more power, but I had an original plug in #6 (I had only replaced 1-5, the 6th plug was broken, waiting for replacement, NGK 5992: Gap - .022 ) which would misfire at high RPM so we ( T ) left boost lower at redline.

W O W !!

I have to give Terry a BIG SHOUT OUT !!
His Tunes are Amazing, his Customer Service is way above par

E85 FTW

And here are the pics to go with this Amazing Day !!

Well, at least for me,

E85 is the fuel of choice if you can find it.

The discussion below and the comments raised were thoughtful and very helpful to me, and I think on point here. I wouldn't presume to have anything snarky to say about anyone's decision to go with a 550 or an M5, and I think the same goes for picking the 535i. For what it's worth, I was persuaded to go the 535 route. Damn, it's a rocket.

Good luck.

So here is a silly question. Apples to apples, if you installed the ESS supercharger for the 550i and JB4 for the 535, would they run similar power, times, etc? They both seem to give about the same 100hp gain. But being the v8 has more displacement, i wonder about the torque value.

JB4 = +100 HP (not sure about torque)
ESS SC (stage 2) = +120HP /100 lb ft

If those are the only mods, the ESS kit wins based on the extra torque and quicker power delivery (as opposed to turbo engines which all have lag) plus the fact the the base HP edge goes to the 550 to begin with (300 HP in the 535 vs 367 HP in the 550). If other mods are added, as you see PC MAC DR produced 442HP, however, the 550 with SC kit, headers, exhaust, and intake/scoop should end up in the 500+HP range - the ESS numbers on their website are with an otherwise stock 550.

exactly
i have no idea why everyone compare "modded" 535i to a "stock" 550i
apple to orange
you can install ESS on 550i and get another 120HP so no need to keep "off topic"

• 6PSI Supercharger system for BMW E60/61 550i and E63/64 650i.

• Adds 120 hp/80 ft. lbs. torque

I assume the ESS supercharger would be around $10K or so. For that price, you are now talking about a Vishnu/FFTEC single turbo for the 535i. The single turbo kit on a 535i would add 300 to close to 400 hp over stock. That's 300 to almost 400 more WHEEL hp than a stock 535i for about $10K. Vishnu/FFTEC single turbo 335s are putting out about 600 to 650 rear wheel hp.
