1st post, very informative forum.
Here is my situation, got a 545i back in March, couldn't choose the specs as I was moving back from the US to the UK and needed a car right away.
I am thinking about getting a touring this time build to my spec.
I have read that the 535d should be available by the autumn and was wondering what the very well informed people over here think.
I love the 545i engine, and I don't drive that much, <10k a year so not sure if diesel makes sense and I have never owned a diesel car before. I am sure it will be a good engine but really like the 545i...However for resale purpose diesel might make a lot of sense...
Also I will get the HUD as it just looks too cool to miss :lol: ! Thinking Titanium gray with grey interior for the new beast....

I'm biased but Titanium was my choice....I've seen an E61 in titanium and it looked fantastic, if going with a black or grey interior, go for the maple trim also

I prefer the driving experience of the 530d over the 545i so all I can imagine is the 535d will be even further ahead of the 545i in real-world british road conditions.

remember to factor in the economy......you'll probably double your milage with diesel so at the uk's impending ?4 or $7.75 a gallon fuel charges it could save you a load of cash.

Mileage is definitely the big plus for the diesel, no doubt, still trying to get accustomed to pay more than $6.5 per gallon, I always mention this to my US friends when they mention they now have to pay >$2....
I currently have a black interior with the blackish wood trim, nto quite sure the actual name, it is very nice but think I will go with the lighter gray with the next one.
Also will have to get the panoramic sunroof...

You've already got the maple trim, I've gone for that with a black interior but my dealer has a 545 with grey interior/mapel and it looks great also.

The E61 roof is amazing...really lights up the inside of the car, We were considering the roof for my wifes X3 but at ?1000 we cannot justify it for a school-run bus/occasional family car

Hmm, if it was me, I'd stick with the 545i. At sub 10k miles per annum, I don't think you'll get much benefit from the 530d/535d.

Hell, it'll be 4 years before you've run the diesel in :P

It was my original thinking, I mean there isn't much difference in the price of petrol vs diesel. Can't wait to drive the 35d either as it will be available only towards late '04. Having say that, I don't manage much better than 15-16mpg with the 545i so the 35d would be better no doubt.

You are right that's maple. I am actually looking at the normal wood finish for this one, surprisingly tough to find good picture of grey interior with wood I must say. I am fond of the normal wood finish that I had in a previous car. The roof is expensive but really looks great
