I had the same exact dilema a few months back and I chose the 545i for the extra room and it has a bit more luxury feel to it than the 3 series. I'm in my 30's and I have owned two other 3 series so I needed a change though.

My Ride: 2004 BMW 530i - no mods. Pretty basic really. I mean it has tires, windows, and a sweet look, what more could a man want? Honestly, I'd like to improve the sound system mildly, and possibly find a worthy engine mod that would increase my BHP by 100 without giving an arm and a leg for. I don't think it's out there, so I'll stay stock and love driving my 530i.
I have both an E60 and E90... I also have a 7 year old daughter and wife. The 3 does the job and can haul the family around, but it's not really ideal to travel with. For our long trips we take the E60, for more fun around the town "I" drive the E90. While the E60 is certainly capable the E90 is a bit more fun. You're looking at a 545, so there's lots of fun to have there too :-) I have a 530, and it's not as fun as the 330. Plus I'm 6'3" and for the sake of room and luxury I'd choose the E60 over most driving occasions. In fact we're thinking about selling the 2006 E90...

Have you driven both yet? If not, that should cinch it for you....Also as others have said, if you have a family, the E60 would be the obvious choice, however if you are single, the 335i would be a kick! Good Luck with your decision and keep us posted!

I started down the same path - ended up with a 06 550i. the size did it for me as I have 2 kids and the ride in the 5 is much better for trips than the 3.
good luck.
good luck.

My Ride: 2005 BMW 545i
Price and maintenance costs are a big factor. I really wanted an E92 335i but at the time used ones were a good $7-$10k more than the 545i I ended up picking up. The 545i was produced in 2004 and 2005 while the 335i came out in 2006 I believe. And if you do get a 2006-2007, be wary of soon-to-be expiring warranties as there are numerous problems with the 335i, especially around the 2007 MY (most notably the HPFP issue).
I rode in my friend's E92 335i and it definitely feels sportier yet is still luxurious and comfy. I am still in my earlier 20's and no family yet but the 545i still has the fun factor and power while offering nice cargo space. I do miss a sportier coupe but the 545i has an aura of elegance about it that the 3-series does not. Plus I think the E92 coupe looks a tad feminine and dull to me styling wise. I'd much rather pick up a used E46 M3.
Test drive both and you'll know for sure!
