its the electronics... so if you garage it and keep it in a good weather location. No COLD to HOT temperature swings... parked indoors to prevent moisture from the night. Try to keep it away from the baking sun, make sure the weather seals are all good so rain water doesn't get in then the electronics will last much longer.
Good point. I always try to use the aircraft avionics rule. Shut down all electrical systems before turning the car off. Presumingly that will prevent large current spikes from going thru the electronics while they are powered on next time you start the car, possibly extending their life.

Yes that too. I tend to turn off the AC, Fan, turn the Radio volume down, and shut off all lights before shutting down the engine. Just habit.

Mine is three years old and has been working great, no major issues. I would always want some kind of warranty on one of these cars though.

My feelings are as such...I have an 04 545 that gave me a regular dose of service visits for the first year and half or so but it was always for electronics never anything mechanical. The car has around 80 thousand kms on it now and it seems that the older it gets the more reliable it gets. I realize that this may sound insane but i believe the electronic bugs were worked out with the numerous dealer visits and reprograms it had during the cars youth. I personally believe that once all the initial hick ups and crap are dealt with that the car will become a very reliable car...kind of like fine wine, more aged the better. During the last 25000kms the car has been NO problem other than regular servicing/maintenance issues. I must admit that the beginning was very frustrating but as of late it has been as reliable as anything i have ever owned previously. Dont be to scared to take the plunge it is well worth it.

Hey after a couple of months of snooping on this site i believe this is my first post...yahooo!

They never offered the 540i E60 here, and the 545i was replaced by the 550i.
