I think I'd rather go the used route with a Ferrari. The depreciation is huge. Also my understanding is that most new ones go to previous owners that are willing to pay huge premiums over invoice in order to drive the latest and greatest. The 355 berlinetta can be had for 85K with under 10K mi. Not bad if you love cars. Watching the used market and the 360 is still catching a premium, maybe when the new model comes out it will drop. They are still 100K ++. I like the 360 over the 355 but they are both awesome sexy Italian machines. Good friend has a 355 and it is so much fun.

Plan on keeping this car for a good while, but wouldn't mind getting a good buy on a used e46 M3 or an e39 M5.

There is but one choice at present: the M5.
If BMW can keep the price tag in the $80-90K range including some typical options, I'll take the leap in 2 years.
