Depends on what you want. If you want performance, then the M5 or M6 is certainly a good next car. If you want luxury, you might step up to the new redesigned 7 series in a couple of years (or even the 760 with the 12 cylinder engine). If you want a convertible, then the 6 series may be next.
Of course, there are choices from other manufacturers (such as Porsche and Mercedes) to consider as well.

I plan on keeping the car for 5+ years however the M5 is appealing but much too much $$$. Supposedly for MY2006 there will be a new V8 engine producing around 350 hp and more torque labeled as a 550 which will replace the 545. My guess is that'll be introduced in the E65 facelift first and work its way down like the new i6 engines will. That might give me something to consider however I'm quite happy with the cars power as it stands now.

My Ride: #1: 2004 545i; 6-speed manual; Sport Package; Mystic Blue with a gray leather interior and Anthracite wood; CWP; Logic 7.
#2: 2010 535xi Touring; Automatic.
In a few years, I might try to convince my wife to get the next-generation 5-series wagon. My E60 545 will last me for hopefully ten years.
I'm looking at the 2005 Corvettes or maybe a classic "vette or a 2004 'vette, all with a turbo charger, just to change things up a little. Maybe a Hemi truck. Or maybe a Viper. mmmm.....we'll see. or maybe a Z4 with a turbo-charger.
Something that will blow away a 545. The 530 will go to my wife.

Three cars I would love to own in the near future.....2006 M5, a '72/'74 Cadoo (preferably a Fleetwood Brougham) and then big one, the Holy Grail of Italian machinery.......either a late '90's Ferrari 355, or 01'/02' Ferrari 360 depending on miledge.
I will also always own a second vehicle for beating on around town and driving in the winter. I think too many people care what others think about them to lower their standards and drive a winter beater. I love it, totally throws the nosey neighbors off guard (ahhh the kid must be slipping...huh).
