For those not fully up to date on this subject look here...

experience from Jack-E61

valvetronic levers

Soon I will have a brand new engine in my 545i.

Having changed twice valvetronic levers and shafts last year to what BMW believed was the cause of a slight tapping noise when engine is cold between 1700-2200rpm has not concluded to a satisfactory solution.

Since 2 months ago a process involving a FSE began to reach a confirmed diagnosis. A bore/cylinder inspection with a mini camera via the spark plug insertion ( to evaluate the possibility of piston slap ) did not
prove helpful. Cylinders seemed OK from the top part at least. The FSE/chief mechanic wanted to actually measure the cylinder/piston tolerance, which meant lifting out the engine and basically taking it apart starting from under the sump and crankshaft.
Obviously concerned, but happy with the service, I waited patiently for the outcome...

Recieved an email informing that I get a new engine. Have to wait for some parts but the engine change is a 2 day event.

WOW.

I don't know yet the details on what ground they are changing it. Incorrect motor block tolerance ? Not sure.
What I am sure, is that BMW and especially my dealer have come through on their service commitment and are to be commended.

Soon, new break-in.....again.

Will update with the confirmed diagnose of the motor.

PS. old engine had 15000 miles on it.

They should give you the 4.8L motor for all the trouble.

That's good news, Andre. Did the subject come up of upgrading the freebie to a 550 engine?

Hi Jim,
It's a no go. Car is registered as 545i. Would present tax, registration and insurance issues. It's basicaly illegal. I don't need to risk it anyways - 333hp was and is still enough....

Andy.

I understand. We might run into something similar here in the US of A. OTOH, I have opted for the Dinan high flow and may add the air flow meter when available. If I get the 3% out of the Remus (they say 3-5%) and the 17 hp from the intake mod, I should be approaching the 350 hp. That should hold me unitl my next birthday.

Hmm. Never had that experience, but always found slightly used to work very well.
