I get a very quiet, slight ticking sound when the engine is cold. It is audible in the passenger compartment when the audio is muted. It sounds like one or possibly two of the lifters or intermediates are making it. Once the engine gets up to normal operating temp, it completely goes away. My only concern is that it will worsen with age. I didin't notice it until recently when my CCC failed and I had no audio, so it may have been there all along. I have about 18,000 miles on it.
I considered taking it to the dealer for analysis and possible repair, but I'm a little concerned any cure attempted may be worse than the symptom. Having someone horse around with the complicated valve train to eliminate a little intermittent noise violates my "if it aint broke, don't fix it" logic. It really doesn't bother me all that much anyway.

I am currently living with this problem since I've exhausted all options and my patience has worn out. It's really not that bad if you leave your radio pumping along.....

I think they noise will lead to other problems in the future.I've been complaining about noise ever since i got the car,but they told me it was normal. They wouldn't even log it in the computer.Even the check in guy would say whats wrong with your car,but the SA would just tell me it's normal. My car got so bad it started to backfire before they did something and changed my vavle levers.(car at 11,500 miles)The car was ok for about 2 days before i noticed the noise again, but engine seemed to be running better.1K miles later my passengers in the car ask me what the hell is that noise and why is your car shaking so much.
Dang! that sounds bad...

No clatter with my 545.
When I first got my car, the stock exhaust is so quiet that it sounded like a computer whizzing away. Now that I have the Remus, it sounds like a real engine again. Not sure if this is what you're talking about...

It could be that you are all describing "piston slap"..a problem for which ford, gm and dodge have issued recalls.

My Ride: BMW 545iA Black Sapphire
Model Year: 2005
Engine: 545i
I had the valvetronic levers changed twice even, the "ticking" noise was still present....
FSE has confirmed that the noise is originating/embedded "deep" in the engine. Report sent to Munich, currently awaiting reply for way foward. I expect a major repair.....

My car was shaking at idle from day ONE. I was told that the ECU was adjusting itself to my driving and the weather. I have brought it in countless times for this reason, but they just refuse to change the intermediate valve levers. The FSE here even suggested changing engine mountings.
Well, the odometer reads 24oooKm now and the shake still hasn't gone away. And yes, there is a slight clatter at approx 2000 rpm but its not too annoying in mine.
I will FINALLY be sending my ride in for a full probe next week and hopefully they can pinpoint the cause of the shakes; otherwise I'll demand a replacement engine.
