I have been told by an Indy that the 545i's have a high frequency of valve guide problems at 100,000 miles + The fix requires a good 30 hour of labor including what amounts to a rebuilding of the engine. I love the car and would like to know if this problem is factual and frequent.
Please add your thoughts/opinions and/or experiences. IE Have you heard this is a common problem.

Thanks

Brittle and break. Bad material to begin with. symptoms are HEAVY oil Burn and exhaust smoke.

New to me ... You may want to seek another opinion since you seem to be questioning the legitimacy of the claim. You NEED a mechanic you trust. If you cant find a good indy shop, spend the money to have BMW tell you whats wrong before you sink that much cash into it.

Your car has two valves per each cylinder (2x8=16 valves) the valve guide/seal needs to be replaced on EACH one of them. The engine may need to be removed depending on how much clearance there is to get to all of the valves. This is not an engine rebuild as long as the cylinder heads don't need to come off.

30 hours of labor still seems excessive so I would definitely get another opinion. Good luck.

valve guides hold and guide the valve.

Valve guide seal prevents oil from engine from sucking in oil down the guide.

he is either full of it, or talking about something else. the valve guides are metal and pressed in the heads. they dont get brittle and break. usually they wear out with very high mileage, and you'd see smoke out your exhaust.

now if it were the valve stem seals going bad, you'd see smoke coming out of your exhaust too.

Thanks everyone. Turbo, I understand that either bad seals or bad guides can cause smoke and or excessively oil use. Which of the two problems requires a 25 30 hour repairand is either one tending to happen a lot in particular, with the n62 engines at 100,0000 mile's. Plus????

if you have bad valve stem seals, you'll really notice smoke when idling, and especially after idling for a while and then giving the engine gas....thats when the smoke shows the worst.
