I took a much simpler approach. I removed the 545i badge and replaced it with a 550i badge...
Seems a bit silly but the cars look the same (pre LCI) and I just don't drive the car hard enough to feel the difference between 325hp and 360hp. The car is fast...

My Ride: 04 545 jet black/beige, smg sport,premium,sunshades,logic7,cwp,nav,pdc,bluetooth,16.0,light tint all around,Pirelli PZeroNero
i would put it as simple as that:very different(much better) car-in terms of everything from engine/suspension/brakes to design/electronics.Actually my 08 550 SAT reminds me of my old 01 E39 540 sport that i had and thought to be better than 04 E60.

The 550i is the same 545i with +30 Kg and +7-8% power . It's the same car, don't listen to those who say the 550i is another car .
Do you want more power ?
You can get 50 HP from mods on your 545i and it will be faster than the 550i .

Hi
I have a 545 now (December 2003) and I'm considering to change to a used 550 (2005 or 2006). Will I feel the fact, that the 550 has more HP and more torque (+ 10 %)? I Switzerland I saw several used 550 and I'm quiet tempted to change, but I'm very much interested to have some input from you!
Thanks, regards
Thomas

I dissagree. My 545i SMG beat out a 550 from start on. Add to the fact that the 550 has less fuel range and poorer gas mileage, I suggest he stays with the 545.

OK - I see lots of folks with 545s believe their cars are every bit as great as a 550 but no 550 owners that wish they had a 545??? It seems like the 545 crowd believes that a few $$$ in mods and they have the same car as the 550.
Let's throw some gasoline on the fire...I don't believe you. The 550 has many, many improvements. It is newer, tighter, has more ponies - and yes I can mod a 550 to further differentiate from a 545. Nothing wrong with a 545 but come on gang...

I agree with you 100% but you need to go back to the original post!! We were asked to compare a 545 with an '05 or '06 550, NOT an LCI 550. Other than the modest increas in HP, there are no real difference between the two cars. In terms of pure increase in power between those two cars, assuming all other options are comparable, I'd stick with the 545 and wait for the new F10. And that's exactly what I said. If he had asked between a 2008 550, with all the LCI improvements, then the choice is clear in my mind, take the '08 550.
Pre-LCI cars had modest improvements between the years. Many members have modded their 545's to reduce/erase the parity between pre-LCI 550 vs 545 for less $$$ than the premium for the 550 would have cost. I know my 545 is not in the league of LCI vehicles. However, I consider my 545 to be somewhat a rarity, considering they were only sold in the US market for 2 model years (04/05)
