Just now starting to consider trading my 2002 330cic in for a 5 series. I am considering either a pre-owned 545 (practical approach), a new 530 (get it exactly the way I want but stay economical) or a new 550 (blow out all the stops!). Does anyone here have or know where I can find a convenient list of the differences among these three models (besides the obvious engine difference)? This probably more particularly applies to the 545 v. the 550, since I know from year to year, BMW introduces new little features, etc. An example of what I mean is I just heard the other day that as of a certain build date, the 3 series started getting the start/stop button as standard equipment. Thanks!

late 2005 models will have:
1- start/stop buttons
2- revise Idrive knob with force feedback
3-Irodium or called it silver thingys on the air vents and the A/C knobs
4- Almost all I drive problems resolved (have had not a single problem yet besides the slow booting sometimes)
5- I vbelieve the power steeering was fixed, my 2004 530 just to wonder a bit on the road as this one is rock solid (same wheels)
6-more wood is standard on the car center console, doors and arm rest rear panel.
7-cup holders bad design is finally fixed.
8- for some reason this car i have feels more solid compare to my 530.
9- increase of horse powere 530 --> 225 to 255 and 550 --> 325 to 360

what else.... oh the increase of horse

So where is the additional wood being added - I have not noticed that difference - I am ordering a 530xi - and trying to decide if anthracite or poplar wood and its like doing a blind choice since it is almost impossible to see them in person ....

I would go with the 545i or the 550i because of the performance difference. In choosing between the two, I would be trading a small increase in performance for a pretty significant increase in price. If you are not overly performance sensistive, then I'd go with the 545i. Personally, I'd get the 550i, but only because of the performance difference and because I like being the first owner. The other differences between the two cars would not matter to me, and some would be slightly less desirable. For example, comfort access/start-stop button are nice, but I prefer the old fashion way. On the other hand, I'd get along with these new features perfectly well. One more point, if you get the 545i, then you would have money left over for wheels, tires, etc.

Well I think a pre-owned 2005 545i should be a good choice since I think most problems have been fixed.
