throw is long and has a rubbery feel.....clutch is very deep....definitely need some modification before I would consider it sporty
I wouldn't consider the throw short, pretty standard though. Unlike many of my fellow forum members, I don't have any engagement issues. As for the clutch, mine has never slipped. I am very please with the manual package.

Nearly all manual BMWs have a clutch delay valve, which to some, adversely affects the driver's ability to engage the clutch smoothly. I believe the only recent model without the CDV is the E39 M5.
I'm not convinced that the CDV is that big a deal. Any shifts in my car that are not smooth are attributable to driver error. The shifter throw could be a little shorter, but IMO, it is precise and positive-feeling.

My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.
I am pleased with the tranmission and clutch feel (after I removed the CDV - a must). It is very smooth for normal driving and positive on hard shifts.
I am not sure if you guys think it is rubbery because it does not feel like a Muncie Rock Crusher with a mechanical clutch, but the feel is good and positive for a luxury sport sedan.
I would call a basic hydraulic clutch you would find on a honda, toyota or saturn rubbery. With the BMW, it is positive...you need to be on if you want it smooth, yet it is somewhat forgiving.
I would not consider the throw long, but it definately is not short. If you want a short throw, the shifters are coming available.
The cluth definately could use a clutch stop and I believe those will be available soon. Last time I looked, companies where working on it.
All of the components can be modified to suit your requirements. So the question of the manual should not be how it feels, but do you want one.
